OPL-SERIES
Optical Fiber Pulse Link

The OPL Fiber Optic Pulse Link Systems are transmitter/receiver pairs that use fiber optic cable to send metering pulses over long distances. Solid State Instruments, the leader in KYZ pulse metering isolation equipment, brings you a substation-hardened solution to send up to four channels of pulses over fiber optic cable.

The OPL Series is available in 1-channel, 2-channel or 4-channel versions. They are designed to use multimode fiber with standard ST connectors. Pulse transmission distances up to approximately 3 miles are possible using the OPL System, depending on the fiber optic cable used. The OPL System makes it possible to quickly implement an optical pulse link with minimal effort and includes all power supplies, wetting voltages, isolation relays and terminal block connectors making it possible to have the optical link up and running in minutes. The system does not include the fiber optic cable.

Each OPL System is made up of an OPT transmitter and an OPR receiver. The OPT-1 transmitter is designed to receive pulses from one electric meter’s KYZ pulse initiator and the OPT-4 is designed to receive pulses from up to 4 meters. Pulses are conditioned and sent by the cable to an OPR receiver where the pulse information is validated and implemented into the correct pulse state. Each channel of the system can be independently configured as either Form A (2-wire) or Form C (3-wire). An OPT-1 transmitter requires an OPR-1 receiver. Likewise, an OPT-4 transmitter requires an OPR-4 receiver.

Additional system options available are two, three and four output versions of the OPL-1 that include multiple isolated outputs, thereby eliminating additional duplicating or repeating pulse relays. An OPL-2 system is available for two channel applications making it more economical for those needing two independent pulse channels. A two-input, four-output option is also available eliminating any additional repeating relays.

Bright red and green LEDs monitor the input status to the OPT transmitter and provide easy & immediate visual system checking without additional test equipment. An incorrect sequence of input pulses will not be recognized and only the first valid pulse of the sequence will be transmitted. While the OPT transmitters are primarily designed for the transmission of metering and demand interval pulses, it is capable of transmitting any desired set of up to four Form A or C contact closures such as switches, breaker status, etc. to an OPR receiver.

OPR receivers also include bright red and green LEDs to monitor the output status of each channel of the OPR receiver. Each relay output features a mercury-wetted relay for a no-bounce contact with internal transient suppression circuitry to eliminate contact wear and noise. Contacts are Form C.
